Turn a ZIP archive into a PDF

If the ZIP contains nothing but JPG and PNG pictures, drop it into PDFGym's CBZ to PDF tool: a comic archive is simply a ZIP of images, so the tool reads yours directly and sorts the pictures by number. If the archive also holds PDFs, Word files or other image formats, unzip it and give each type its own route before joining the results.

Thirty-seven receipts in one archive at month end

Joanna manages a small design studio's office. On the last day of March a colleague who has been travelling sends receipts-march.zip: 37 phone photos of taxi, hotel and meal receipts, plus a notes.txt file with the trip code. The expense system takes one PDF per person per month, and the books close tomorrow.

A week later a freelancer hands over project-handover.zip with a signed contract PDF, two invoice PDFs, a Word file of meeting notes and a folder of mockups in WebP. Same request from the client, "can we have it as one PDF?", but a completely different job. The archive's contents, not the archive, decide which route you take.

Look inside without unpacking anything yet

Every common system can show what a ZIP holds. On Windows, double-click it and File Explorer opens it like a folder; Extract All unpacks it. On a Mac, double-clicking unpacks it next to the original in Finder. On an iPhone or iPad, tap it in the Files app and it expands into a folder. On Android, open it in your file manager app, most of which offer an extract option.

Note three things: which file types are in there, whether files sit in subfolders, and how they are named. Those answers pick the row in the table below.

What the archive holds and where it goes

Straight from ZIP to PDF in PDFGym

Joanna's receipts are the first row, so she never has to unzip them.

  1. Open CBZ to PDF and drag receipts-march.zip onto the page. The Choose a CBZ or PDF button lists ZIP files too. There is no need to rename it to .cbz.
  2. Read the page list. Every picture appears with its name and pixel size, sorted naturally, so receipt-2.jpg comes before receipt-10.jpg. The page total should be 37, one per photo.
  3. Choose the paper. A4 or US Letter with a narrow margin suits receipts that accounts might print; Match image keeps each photo's own shape.
  4. Press Convert comic archive. The tool writes the PDF, opens it again and checks every page and the stored picture data before the download appears.
  5. Download. The file takes the archive name, so receipts-march.zip becomes receipts-march.pdf; rename it to the pattern the expense system wants.

For the handover archive, unzip it instead. The contract and invoices go into the merge tool, the WebP mockups through WebP to PDF, and the meeting notes are exported to PDF from Word. A last merge joins those parts in the order the client asked for.

Archive problems and how to get past them

"Image formats that cannot be embedded". The ZIP holds at least one WebP, HEIC, TIFF, GIF or similar picture. Unzip it and send the JPG and PNG files through Images to PDF, the rest through their own converters, then merge.

Fewer pages than files. The archive tool only takes JPG and PNG. A PDF or text file inside is left out without a warning, so compare the page total with what you saw in the archive.

Pages in an odd order. Numbers sort as numbers, but names without numbers, such as taxi.jpg and lunch.jpg, sort alphabetically. Rename the files before zipping again, or fix single pages afterwards in Organize pages. The archive tool itself has no reorder buttons.

Extra junk from a Mac. ZIPs made on a Mac often carry a __MACOSX folder and .DS_Store files. The tool ignores those, as it does Windows thumbs.db files, so they never turn into blank pages.

Too many entries or too heavy. Archives with more than 2,000 entries are refused, and very large ones may not fit in the browser's memory. Split the job by folder. If the finished PDF is too large to send, shrink it with Compress PDF.

When to keep the ZIP as it is

A ZIP is often the right thing to pass along. Auditors and accountants sometimes need the original photo files, with their own dates, rather than pages in a document. Source files, spreadsheets with formulas and design files lose their purpose as PDF pages. And if the recipient's system accepts the archive, converting it only adds a step.

Office documents are the other case where a browser is the wrong tool: the app that made them lays them out correctly, so export there. Going the other direction, squeezing a PDF into a ZIP to make it smaller, rarely helps; the guide on zipping a PDF explains why.

Short answers about ZIP archives

Do I have to rename my .zip file to .cbz?
No. The tool accepts a ZIP as it is and reads the archive from its contents, not its extension.
What happens to a text file or PDF inside the ZIP?
The archive tool skips anything that is not a JPG or PNG picture. Unzip the archive if those files need to be part of the result, and merge them in separately.
Can I change the page order before converting?
Not inside the archive tool; the order comes from the file and folder names. Rename before zipping, or move pages afterwards in Organize pages.
Is my archive uploaded anywhere?
No. The ZIP is opened, converted and checked inside this browser tab, and no file content is sent to a server.

Convert your archive

The archive is unpacked and turned into pages inside this browser tab, and the PDF is opened again and checked before you can save it.
