PDF passwords, sorted out
A locked PDF wears one of two locks, and the fix depends on which one you face. These guides help you name the lock, save a copy you can open without typing, lock your own files, and accept the one case where nothing works: a password nobody remembers.
Which lock sits on your file
Try to open the file and watch what happens. The symptom names the lock, and the lock names the guide. Guessing wrong sends you down a path built for a different problem, so spend ten seconds here first.
| What you see | Lock on the file | Where to go |
|---|---|---|
| Opens, but printing or copying is blocked | Owner lock | Clear the restriction flags |
| Asks for a password before showing anything | Open password, which you know | Save an unlocked copy |
| Asks, and the password is lost | Open password, unknown | Read what is still possible |
| Your own file needs locking | No lock yet | Set an open password on it |
An owner lock is a set of flags asking readers to refuse printing or copying; the pages themselves stay readable. An open password encrypts the whole file, so nothing renders until the right characters are typed. The unlock walkthrough shows how to confirm which one you have, and the decryption explainer spells out what removing each kind really means.
What the tools here do with your password
Unlock PDF opens the file with the password you type and writes a copy without the encryption, all inside the tab. The password decrypts locally and is never transmitted, stored or counted anywhere. That is the entire feature: the password does the opening, the tool does the copying, and nothing is guessed or bypassed.
The same page runs in reverse. Choose Protect, or open Password protect PDF directly, to put an open password onto a file of yours. One warning travels with that button: the encryption that keeps strangers out keeps you out too, so note the password somewhere outside the file before you lock anything that matters.
The folk alternative is printing the opened file to a fresh PDF, which drops the password along the way. It works only where printing is allowed, and the fresh render can shed links, form fields and structure that a proper unlocked copy keeps. Use it as a fallback, not as the plan.
Mistakes that waste a locked afternoon
The most expensive is trusting a site that promises to open the file without asking for anything. Strong encryption has no back door, so that promise ends in a password guesser, an endless queue, or a copy of your document on a stranger disk. Ask the sender for a fresh copy instead; it takes one message and always beats software.
Bank and payroll files deserve a mailbox search first. Their passwords usually derive from your own details, a birth date or account digits, explained in the covering email that reads like spam and waits in the junk folder. And when you lock your own file, send the password through a second channel. The password sitting in the same email as the file is a key taped to the lock.
Short answers about PDF passwords
- Can I remove a password I know?
- Yes. Type it into Unlock PDF and download the decrypted copy it writes in your tab. The file must open with your password first; the tool cannot start from a file nobody can open.
- What if the file opens but refuses to print?
- That is an owner lock, not encryption against you. Unlocking clears the flags so readers stop blocking print and copy. No guessing is involved.
- Where is my password while the tool runs?
- In the browser tab, used for decryption and nothing else. It is never sent, stored or included in any usage data.
- Can a forgotten password be recovered here?
- No. A lost open password on a modern file cannot be recovered by any tool here or elsewhere. The forgot password guide lists the few routes still worth trying, starting with the sender.
Open a file now
Everything happens in this tab. The file and the password stay on your machine, and the unlocked copy is written locally before it downloads.
