Cut the empty pages out of a scanned PDF
Open the file in Delete PDF pages, look down the thumbnail grid for the pale sheets, tick Remove this page on each one and download the new copy. Nothing decides for you which page is empty: you choose, and PDFGym then confirms that every page you kept came through unchanged.
A lease, a copier and a 5 pm deadline
Picture this. You fed a 23-sheet signed lease through the office copier, forgot that it was
still set to two-sided, and got back lease-signed-scan.pdf with 46 pages. Every
second one is the bare back of a sheet. The letting agent wants the file today, and their
upload form rejects anything over 10 MB.
Scanning again is one option, but the originals may already be in a folder across town. The quicker fix is to drop the 23 empty backs from the file you have. Because a scanned page is a full picture of the sheet, even an empty back carries a whole page image, so losing half the pages usually takes a real bite out of the size as well. How big depends on your scanner and its settings.
Steps in Delete PDF pages
- Go to Delete PDF pages and press Choose a PDF, or drag the scan onto the page. The file is read inside this browser tab and is not uploaded.
- Wait for the preview grid. Each page becomes a small thumbnail labelled with its position, so a 46-page scan gives you 46 tiles to look over.
- Tick Remove this page under every empty tile. The label switches to Will be removed, and the line above the grid keeps a running count, for example 23 pages marked and 23 will remain.
- Made a wrong pick? Untick it, or use Undo, Redo and Clear all marks. Marked pages stay on screen, so nothing vanishes before you agree to it.
- Press the button below the grid to run the removal. The new file is written, opened again and compared with the pages you kept before the download is offered.
- Save the result. It is named after your file with
-pages-removedadded, and the original on your disk is left exactly as it was.
Where empty pages come from
Knowing the source helps you decide whether a pale page should go, and how to avoid the same cleanup next month.
| Source | How you recognise it | Usually |
|---|---|---|
| Two-sided scan of one-sided paper | Every even page is pale, in a strict alternating pattern | Remove |
| Separator or cover sheet between batches | The same plain or barcoded sheet repeats between documents | Remove |
| Printed book or report | A pale page just before a new chapter that starts on the right | Remove for screen reading, keep if the file will be printed as a booklet |
| Back of a form | Looks empty in the grid, but may carry terms in small grey print | Check at full size first |
Pages that only look empty
A thumbnail is about the size of a postage stamp. Before you mark a pale page, open the file in any PDF viewer at full size and look for these:
- A signature, initials or a date written lightly in pencil or blue ink.
- A received stamp, a fax header or a Bates number in a corner.
- Terms and conditions printed in light grey on the reverse of an invoice or form.
- A single line such as "continued overleaf" or a page number at the foot.
- Coloured paper, where faint print can disappear into the tint at small sizes.
Where blank-page cleanups go wrong
Counting by the numbers printed on the paper. If page 12 of the document sits at position 13 in the file because of a cover sheet, you mark the wrong tile. Go by the thumbnails and their position labels, not by the footer.
Marking every page by accident. Mark all is handy for big batches, but the tool will not run if nothing would remain. Use Clear marks and start again.
Trimming a digitally signed file. The digital signature covered the whole original file, so the trimmed copy cannot carry a valid one. Keep the signed original and send the trimmed copy alongside it, or ask the signer for a clean version.
Compressing first, trimming second. Shrinking the file before you delete pages spends time and quality on sheets you were about to drop. Remove the empty ones, then run Compress PDF on what is left if it is still too big.
A file that will not open. Password-protected PDFs are refused. If you know the password, remove it with Unlock PDF first. Also note that the tool warns you when the file has bookmarks, form fields or attachments, because the new copy may not keep them.
Why you pick the pages yourself
To software, an empty scanned sheet is a large photo of off-white paper with dust, a crease shadow and maybe some show-through from the other side. Deciding where "nearly white" ends means choosing a cut-off, and any cut-off will someday throw out a page that held one faint signature. So PDFGym shows you every page and leaves the call to you.
The same caution shapes the check at the end. For pages with a text layer, the tool compares the text of each kept page with the source. A plain scan usually has no text layer, so the result screen says there was no selectable text to compare, and the check rests on the page count and each page keeping its exact width and height. Your eyes on the grid are the real safeguard.
When another route is better
Stop it at the scanner. Many scanner drivers and copier panels have an option to skip empty pages, or simply a one-sided mode. The wording varies by brand, so look in the scan settings before the next batch. Our guide to scanning several pages into one PDF covers the rest of that setup.
Hundreds of files every week. Marking pages by hand does not scale to a mailroom. Desktop PDF software or a document capture system with automatic blank detection is the better fit there; just spot-check what it removes.
Records you are not allowed to alter. Court filings, audit evidence and archived originals often must stay exactly as scanned. Ask whoever owns the record, or your IT or records team, before trimming anything.
If you also want to reorder or rotate pages in the same pass, Organize pages lets you delete selected tiles and move the rest around before saving.
Quick answers
- Will the remaining pages look different after the cleanup?
- No. Kept pages are copied into the new file as they are, not redrawn or re-compressed, so a scan looks just as sharp and any selectable text stays selectable.
- Can I get a removed page back after I download?
- Yes, from the original. The tool never touches the file on your disk, so you can open it again and keep a different set of pages.
- Do the page numbers change?
- The positions do: with 23 empty backs gone, the old page 3 becomes page 2. Numbers printed on the paper itself stay as printed, because the page content is not edited.
- What does the downloaded file get called?
- Your original name with
-pages-removedadded before the extension, so the cleaned copy sits next to the original instead of replacing it.
Clean up your scan
Everything happens in this tab: the file stays on your device, and the new copy is checked page by page before you can save it.
