Merge PDF files
Merging your PDFs
Merge complete
Details
Drop in two or more PDFs, arrange them in the order you want, and press Merge PDFs. The browser joins every page into one new file, then reopens that file and compares its pages and text with the sources before the download appears. Nothing is uploaded, no account is needed, and the output carries no watermark.
From separate files to one PDF in four steps
-
Drop in the files
Press Choose PDFs, or drag your files straight onto the page. Each file is read in this browser tab and added to the File order list with its name, page count and size. Until at least two PDFs are present, the Merge PDFs button stays greyed out with the hint Choose at least two PDF files first.
-
Set the sequence with the arrows
Every file carries Move up and Move down arrow buttons, plus a Remove button if you dropped one file too many. The output follows the list exactly: every page of the first file, then every page of the second, and so on. Read the list top to bottom before you continue, because that is the document your reader will scroll through.
-
Press Merge PDFs and watch the checks run
The setup view gives way to a progress view while the browser builds the combined file from your pages. Each stage is listed as it runs, and the last stage reopens the new file to compare it with the sources. A result that fails the comparison is never offered for download.
-
Read the proof line, then download
The result view shows the new file size next to the total input size, plus a proof line stating how many pages were inspected and how much selectable text survived. Press Download to save the file. It is named after the first file in your list with -merged added, so rental-application.pdf becomes rental-application-merged.pdf.
Merging here costs nothing and asks for no account. The page loads over the web and then does the whole job on your machine, so your documents never leave this browser tab.
A rental packet assembled the evening before the viewing
Your viewing is at nine in the morning and the agent wants one PDF, not six attachments. On your laptop sit rental-application.pdf, two monthly payslips, a quarterly bank statement, a passport scan and a reference letter from your previous landlord: 19 pages in total. The order matters, with the application first, the ID last and the money in the middle.
Drop all six files into the tool in any order, then use the arrow buttons to line them up: application, payslips, statement, reference, passport. If the bank statement is password-protected, the tool refuses it with a plain message instead of failing halfway through; remove the password first with Unlock PDF and drop the unlocked copy in. A file with fillable fields gets a short notice beside its name, warning that the new file may not keep those fields editable.
Before you press Merge PDFs, glance at the totals under the list: six files, 19 pages, a few megabytes. After the run, the proof line confirms the page count and the kept text, and the download arrives as rental-application-merged.pdf. Open it once, scroll from the first page to the last, and send it. If the agent's inbox rejects the size, run the merged file through Compress PDF and name a target size.
Merge mistakes and how to undo them
The order came out backwards. File pickers sort alphabetically, so cv.pdf lands above cover-letter.pdf even though the letter should come first. Fix it before merging with the arrow buttons. If you already merged, open the result in Organize pages and drag or nudge the pages into place instead of merging again.
A locked file stopped the run. A password-protected PDF is refused up front with a clear message. Open it with the password you already know in Unlock PDF, save the unlocked copy and merge that. Nothing here guesses or breaks passwords.
Bookmarks or form fields went missing. The merge copies pages, not the document furniture around them: outlines, custom page labels, attachments and interactive fields may not travel into the new file. The tool warns you beside each affected file before you merge. If filled answers must stay visible, lock them first with Flatten PDF.
The same file went in twice. A duplicate is easy to miss when the names look alike. The page total under the list gives it away: if it reads higher than you expected, scan the list for the repeated name and press its Remove button.
The merged file is too heavy to send. Merging adds the parts together without shrinking anything, so five scans become one large file. Run the result through Compress PDF and type the size the mailbox or portal asks for.
When merging in a browser is the wrong call
Sometimes the job only looks like a merge. Pages that must interleave, such as odd pages from one scan and even pages from another, will not weave themselves: merge first, then arrange the result page by page in Organize pages. A file whose password you do not know cannot be merged here at all; ask the sender for the password or an unlocked copy. And a merge of several hundred megabytes of scans can exhaust a browser tab, in which case merging in two halves, or a desktop app with no tab ceiling, is the steadier route.
If your source is not PDF yet, convert it before you merge. Word documents become PDFs with Word to PDF, photos with Images to PDF, and only then do they belong in the file list. To number the pages of the finished document from start to end, use Stamp PDF on the merged file.
Short answers about merging PDFs
- The files landed in the wrong order. What happened?
- The list follows the order your file picker handed the files over, which is usually alphabetical. Use the Move up and Move down arrows to set the sequence you want before you press Merge PDFs. Nothing re-sorts the list behind your back.
- One of my PDFs has a password. Can I still merge it?
- Not while it is locked. The tool refuses password-protected files up front. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, using the password you already know, then merge the unlocked copy.
- What will the downloaded file be called?
- It takes the name of the first file in your list and adds -merged, so contract.pdf becomes contract-merged.pdf. Rename it to anything you like after downloading.
- My merged file is too big to send. What now?
- Merging joins the parts without shrinking them, so run the result through Compress PDF and type the size the mailbox or portal asks for. If you want to see which pages weigh the most first, open Size breakdown.
- Will my filled-in form answers survive the merge?
- The visible content usually stays, but the fields may stop being editable and bookmarks or attachments may not travel into the new file. Each affected file gets a notice beside its name before you merge. To lock filled answers into the page, run the file through Flatten PDF first.
- Can I merge PDFs whose pages face different directions?
- Yes. Every page keeps the size and orientation it had, so a sideways scan stays sideways in the merged file. Straighten the result afterwards with Rotate PDF, one page or all pages at once.
