Get the empty pages out of a duplex scan
Blank pages from a duplex scan are removed by eye in Delete PDF pages: open the file, tick the empty thumbnails, and press Remove pages. There is no automatic detector, because a guess could discard a page carrying a faint stamp. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.
Forty pages from the office copier, nine of them air
An office manager feeds a 31-page supplier contract through the copier's duplex feeder and gets supplier-contract.pdf back with 40 pages: nine blank backs where single-sided sheets showed their empty reverse. Nine pages of nothing, scattered through the file, each one a full page image adding weight. The contract goes to legal tomorrow, and legal should not have to scroll past air.
- Open Delete PDF pages and drop supplier-contract.pdf in. All 40 pages appear as thumbnails.
- Scroll the grid and tick each blank page. Its label flips to Will be removed, and the status line counts down toward 9 pages will be removed and 31 will remain.
- Read the marked set once: nine ticks, all visibly empty, none carrying a stamp, header or signature. Press Remove pages.
- Press Download PDF and save supplier-contract-pages-removed.pdf. Skim the 31 survivors to confirm the contract reads start to finish.
Nine ticks, one run, a contract with no air in it. The original 40-page scan still sits on the disk untouched, so any doubt about a removed page is answered by opening the source, not by rescanning.
Telling a truly blank page from a keeper
At thumbnail size every pale page looks blank, but some pale pages matter. Run through this checklist on each candidate before you tick it:
- Compare the candidate with its neighbours. A true blank matches the paper tone everywhere; a keeper carries a mark, however faint.
- Hole-punch shadows and edge dust are scanner dirt, not content. A stamp, a signature, a header line or a page number is content.
- Open the file in a reader at full size for any page you cannot call from the thumbnail. Two seconds of zoom beats a wrong deletion.
- Remember that faint does not mean empty. Pencil notes, light stamps and carbon-copy ghosts all count as pages to keep.
- When unsure, keep the page. One extra blank in the file costs nothing next to a deleted page that mattered.
This deliberate caution is why no detector picks the pages for you. Software cannot tell a coffee stain from a signature at a glance, and the cost of its mistake lands on you, not on it.
Blank-page cleanups that backfire
Deleting the faint but vital page. A received stamp in pale blue, a pencil initial, a carbon copy of the page before: all look blank at thumbnail size. Zoom the doubtful ones in a reader before ticking.
Assuming blanks cluster together. Duplex blanks scatter wherever single-sided sheets sat in the stack. Scroll the whole grid instead of clearing the first few empties and assuming the rest is clean.
Breaking printed pagination. A contract numbered 1 to 31 in its footers keeps those numbers after the blanks go, which is exactly right. But if the blanks themselves carried numbers, the survivors will show gaps; renumber with Stamp PDF only if the gaps confuse the reader.
Cleaning every scan by hand forever. The copier caused this and the copier can stop it: most scanner drivers offer a skip-blank-sides option that drops empty backs at scan time. Turn it on for the next batch and this page becomes a one-time visit.
Expecting a smaller file and getting a bigger worry. Removing nine blank scans does cut real weight, since each blank is a full page image. If the file is still too heavy for the inbox, run the survivors through Compress PDF with the size the mailbox allows.
When deletion is not the answer
Not every blank comes from a scanner. A document exported from an office app with section breaks lands a blank wherever a chapter refused to start on a left page; fix the breaks in the source and export again instead of trimming every copy. A paginated original that must stay provably complete, such as filed evidence, should keep its blanks with an explanatory note rather than lose pages a reader will ask about.
Blank separators inside a batch scan that also needs reordering belong in Organize pages, where deleting and arranging happen in one grid. And a file whose password nobody knows cannot be cleaned anywhere until the sender shares it or an unlocked copy.
Short answers about blank pages
- Why does nothing detect the blanks for me?
- Because detection guesses, and a wrong guess deletes a page carrying a faint stamp, header or signature. Picking nine thumbnails by eye takes a minute; recovering a wrongly deleted page takes far longer.
- Will removing blanks shrink the file?
- Often by a lot. A blank from a scanner is still a whole page picture, so nine blanks out of forty pages can carry close to a quarter of the bytes. Ranges of text pages shrink less dramatically.
- Can I undo a removal?
- Before the run, yes: Undo, Redo and Clear all marks revise the plan freely. After the download, the source file on your disk is left alone, so re-run with different marks any time.
- My scanner keeps making blanks. How do I stop it?
- Open the scanner driver settings and look for an option that skips blank sides during duplex scanning. It drops empty backs at scan time, so the next file arrives clean.
- Does the page order change when blanks go?
- No. The survivors keep their relative order exactly. Removal only takes pages out; it never moves the ones that stay.
Clear the blanks now
Open the removal tool and tick the empty thumbnails. Nothing leaves this machine, and the kept pages are checked before the download appears.
