Turn sideways PDF pages and make the fix stick
Most viewers only spin the picture on your screen, so the page is sideways again for the next person who opens it. To make the turn permanent, it has to be written into the page itself and saved as a new file. Rotate PDF does that in your browser, page by page or for the whole document, and checks the result before you download it.
The accountant says page 7 is still on its side
Leena manages a small office and scanned a 14-page supplier delivery pack on the copier,
delivery_pack_march.pdf. Pages 3, 7 and 8 are wide spreadsheets that came out lying on
their side, and page 11 went through the feeder upside down. She turned them in her browser's PDF
viewer, pressed save, and emailed the file. Twenty minutes later the accountant replies: the same
four pages are still wrong.
Nothing went wrong with the email. The viewer changed how the pages were displayed on her screen and never touched the document. Every PDF page carries its own orientation setting, a quarter-turn value stored next to the page content, and until that value changes, every reader shows the page the way the copier left it.
Fixing it in Rotate PDF
- Open Rotate PDF and choose the file. It is read in this tab and never uploaded. A password-protected file is refused, so open it with Unlock PDF first if it asks for a password.
- Use the arrows under the preview to go to the first wrong page. Leave Apply changes to on This page.
- Press Rotate left or Rotate right until the preview reads normally. Each press is a quarter turn.
- Move on to the next wrong page and repeat. For Leena that means pages 3, 7 and 8 once each, and page 11 twice.
- If every page is sideways the same way, switch to All pages and press the button once instead.
- Press Rotate and crop PDF. The new file is opened again and the page count, the text of each page, each rotation and each crop box must match what you asked for before a download appears.
- Read the pages adjusted figure on the result. Leena should see 4. Then download and give the copy a new name.
Which button to press
A sideways page is easy to fix with the wrong button, and three presses the wrong way do get you there eventually. Judge by where the top of the text is pointing.
| What the page looks like | Press | Turn applied |
|---|---|---|
| Lines run upward, the top of the text points left | Rotate right, once | A quarter turn clockwise |
| Lines run downward, the top of the text points right | Rotate left, once | A quarter turn anticlockwise |
| Upside down | Either button, twice | A half turn |
| Tilted by a few degrees | Neither | Not possible as a page rotation; see below |
Undo and Redo step through every press, and Reset pages returns the whole file to how it arrived.
Why the fix does not cost you anything
The tool changes the orientation value and nothing else on the page. The words are not redrawn, so they stay selectable and searchable, and scanned images are not recompressed. That is also why the check can compare the text of every page with the original and refuse the download if anything is missing.
The same screen can trim margins. Crop settings are percentages of each edge and also apply to one page or all of them; Crop PDF opens the tool with that job in mind. A crop only hides the edge, though. What sits outside it remains in the file.
Where page turning usually goes wrong
- Whole document turned when only a few pages were wrong. The correct pages are now sideways. Press Undo, or Reset pages, and work page by page.
- All pages blocked after a few single-page fixes. Once two or more pages have individual changes, the tool will not lay one setting over all of them. Undo or reset those pages first.
- A different count than expected. If the result says 5 pages adjusted and you meant 4, one extra page was turned. Go back before downloading.
- The page prints cut off. The file is right; the print dialog may be set to a fixed orientation. Try its automatic orientation or fit-to-page option.
- A signature broke. Turning pages saves a new file, which invalidates a certificate signature. Fix orientation first and sign last, as the device-by-device signing guide recommends.
When another tool or a rescan is better
A page that is a few degrees crooked cannot be straightened this way, because a PDF only stores orientation in quarter turns. Rescan it, or use your scanning app's straighten and crop feature before the PDF is made; the multi-page scanning guide covers getting pages flat in the first place.
If only a photo or a table inside the page is sideways while the rest reads correctly, turning the page will not help; that needs a full desktop PDF editor or a new export from the original file. And if you already have Preview on a Mac, its rotate command followed by a save also writes the turn into the file, so there is no need to switch tools for a quick job. Very large scans on an older phone can run out of browser memory; a computer handles those more comfortably.
Short answers about turning pages
- Does turning pages make the file blurry?
- No. The page content is not re-rendered, only its orientation value changes. Text stays selectable and images keep their original quality, though the file size can shift slightly because a new file is written.
- Will the fix show up on my phone and on the printer?
- Yes. The orientation is part of the document, so any reader that follows the PDF format shows the page the same way, whether on a phone, a laptop or a print queue.
- Can I turn pages and remove empty ones in one go?
- Not in the same tool. Turn the pages here first, then remove the blanks in Delete PDF pages, as described in the guide to cutting empty scan pages.
- Can I turn a password-protected PDF?
- Not directly. Remove the password with Unlock PDF, turn the pages, and add protection again afterwards if you need it.
