Canva or PDFGym for your PDF?

Pick Canva when the PDF is raw material for a design: a flyer that needs a new headline, a deck that needs better slides. Pick PDFGym when the file itself is the finished product: a contract, a form or a scan that has to reach the next person exactly as it left you.

What Canva does with an imported PDF

Canva describes its own PDF editor as free: you import a PDF and Canva breaks it into editable elements, so you can change it like any design asset and then export it back to PDF, or to JPG, PNG or PPT, or share it as a link. Checked 2 November 2026. Editing runs on any device, and the whole flow assumes you want to restyle the document, not preserve it.

Picture Mara, who runs a bookshop and has to update the prices on last spring's two-page flyer before a weekend fair. She opens the flyer PDF in Canva, clicks the old prices as text boxes, retypes them, and downloads a fresh file for the print shop. Nothing about the original needed to survive, because the new design is the product. That is the job this import flow was built for.

The trade sits inside that phrase, breaks it into editable elements. Once pages become design elements they follow the rules of the design editor rather than the rules of your original file, so what you export is Canva's reconstruction with your tweaks. On a poster that is invisible. On a ten-page supplier agreement with numbered clauses, it means the file you send is no longer quite the file you received.

Who should pick which

Choose Canva when the PDF is a starting point, and PDFGym when the PDF is evidence. The two tools overlap far less than the phrase PDF editor suggests, because one reshapes documents and the other preserves them.

Where Canva is the better choice

Anything where the design is the deliverable. Canva lets you add, delete, rotate and reorder pages, correct typos, swap images, draw shapes and signatures, and leave comments for teammates, all from any device. Checked 2 November 2026. No file utility competes with that, because restyling is a different craft from file handling.

It also converts more formats into PDF than PDFGym does: its editor page names PNG, PPT, HEIC and Excel files as accepted inputs. PDFGym turns images and spreadsheets into PDF too, through images to PDF, HEIC to PDF and Excel to PDF, but it has no slide conversion at all, so a deck that starts life as slides stays a Canva job.

Price is not the argument against it. The PDF editor is described as free, so importing a flyer costs nothing beyond a free account. The paid plans matter for brand kits and other design features, not for opening a PDF. Guides that put Free at zero, Pro at 18 US dollars monthly or 144 yearly for one person, and Business at 25 per user monthly or 250 yearly per person were checked 10 September 2026, and Canva may have moved those numbers since.

Where PDFGym fits instead

Everywhere the file must survive the job unchanged except for the one thing you asked. Rotating and cropping sets the page rotation and the crop box rather than redrawing anything, so text stays selectable and fonts stay put. Merging copies pages in the order you choose, then reopens the result and checks that it opens, that no page is missing or out of order, that each page keeps its size, and that at least 98 percent of the source text survived. A result that fails is not offered for download.

Compression takes an exact size target in kilobytes, tries four local techniques against it, and reads the winner back before the download appears. Metadata removal strips the author name and other hidden fields a design export would happily carry along. And if a contract needs a visible mark, the sign tool draws, types or uploads one onto the page locally, though it is not a certificate signature and proves nothing about identity.

If the real goal is rewriting sentences inside the file, read how to edit a PDF first. It explains which changes are easy, which are hard, and why, before you pick any tool. The free editor roundup then ranks the browser options honestly.

How this comparison was checked

Canva's PDF editor page was read on 2 November 2026 through a text render, because canva.com answers automated fetches with an update-your-browser page. The import, editing and export claims above quote that page. The plan prices come from an earlier read, checked 10 September 2026. PDFGym's behaviors were checked against the tool pages in this site's source. Nothing was timed, no test files were run through either product for this page, and no review site was used.

Short answers about Canva and PDFs

Will Canva keep my PDF exactly as it was?
No. Importing breaks the pages into editable design elements and the export is Canva's reconstruction, checked 2 November 2026. For artwork that is fine. For a file that must stay exact, use a tool that edits the file in place, such as rotate and crop.
Is editing a PDF in Canva free?
Canva describes its PDF editor as free, checked 2 November 2026, so importing a PDF costs nothing beyond a free account. Paid plans cover other design features. The figures seen on 10 September 2026 were 18 US dollars monthly or 144 yearly for Pro, and 25 per user monthly or 250 per person yearly for Business.
I only need to delete one page. Which is faster?
PDFGym. Organize pages drops, reorders and splits pages in one pass with no import step and nothing uploaded. Opening a design app to delete page four is more machinery than the job deserves.
Can I sign a contract in either tool?
Both let you draw a visible signature onto the page, and neither produces a certificate signature with identity proof or an audit trail. For a mark that carries legal weight, use a dedicated signing service instead of either.
