Make an editable Word document from the selectable text in a PDF. PDF pages contain positioned text, not Word paragraphs, so the tool groups text into a reading order and creates a fresh DOCX. It does not reconstruct the original page design.

How to convert PDF to Word

  1. Choose a PDF

Select a PDF with selectable text. Scanned pages need OCR before this converter can read them.

  2. Review the extracted text

Check the reading order in the preview, especially for columns, tables and sidebars.

  3. Create and download DOCX

Each PDF page gets a heading followed by editable paragraphs in the Word file.

What this conversion keeps

A PDF does not carry Word styles or an editable document structure. This converter extracts text and groups lines into paragraphs; it does not recreate tables, images, columns, fonts or exact page positions. Scans without a text layer are refused rather than yielding an empty Word file.

What comes across and what does not

The converter copies the text layer of the PDF into Word. Everything that is text arrives; everything that is drawing, picture or document structure stays behind. The table below is the full list, so you can decide before you convert whether the result will save you time.

Scanned PDFs and OCR

A scan is a photograph of a page. It looks like text, but the file holds only pixels, so there is nothing for a text converter to copy. To check, open the PDF in any reader and try to select a single word. If the selection grabs the whole page as a picture, the page needs OCR (optical character recognition) before it can become Word text.

This converter has no OCR. A PDF with no text at all is refused with a message rather than turned into an empty Word file. A PDF that mixes typed pages and scanned pages converts the typed pages, and the scanned ones appear as a page heading with nothing under it, so scroll through the result before you rely on it.

For the OCR step itself, Adobe Acrobat Pro has a Scan & OCR tool, and Google Drive can open a scanned PDF with Google Docs and recognise the text, with limits on file size. Both are good at it; just note that the Drive route stores a copy of the file in your Google account. Once the PDF has a text layer, this converter can read it.

Layout, columns and fonts

A PDF does not store paragraphs. It stores small pieces of text, each placed at an exact position on the page. The converter groups pieces that sit at the same height into one line, orders the lines from top to bottom, and writes each line as a paragraph. On letters, reports, contracts and other single-column documents this gives clean, readable text.

Three layouts need a look before you download. On two-column pages the left and right columns are read across, so a sentence from one column can be joined to a sentence from the other. Forms with labels on the left and values on the right come out as label and value on one line, which is often what you want. Running headers, footers and page numbers appear as ordinary lines on every page; delete them in Word.

Fonts are not carried over, because the original fonts belong to the PDF, not to your Word installation. Apply your own styles in Word afterwards: select the headings and set them to Heading 1, and the document gets a navigation pane and a table of contents for free.

PDFGym, Word and Google Docs compared

Microsoft Word can open a PDF directly (File, then Open) and tries to rebuild the layout, including tables and pictures. On simple documents it does that well; on complex ones the result can shift. Google Docs converts a PDF when you open it from Google Drive and handles scans through OCR, though the original layout is often lost. Use this converter when you want the text quickly, without installing anything or putting the file in a cloud account.

Your file stays in this browser tab

The converter loads its code when you open the page. Once you choose a file, conversion happens on your device. The file itself is not sent to PDFGym. Close or refresh the tab to clear the selected file and preview from the page.

Convert PDF to Word frequently asked questions

Can I edit the result in Word?
Yes. The output is a real DOCX with editable paragraphs.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
No. Image-only scans need OCR first. This version has no OCR.
Will tables remain tables?
No. Table text may be extracted, but the grid is not reconstructed. For numeric tables, try PDF to Excel.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is read locally in this browser tab.
Why does every line become a separate paragraph?
The PDF records lines, not paragraphs, so the converter cannot know where a wrapped sentence continues. Joining lines in Word is quick, while guessing wrongly would merge headings into body text without telling you.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. If you know the password, remove it first with the Unlock PDF tool, then convert the unlocked copy.
Is there a page or file size limit?
No limit is coded into the tool. Very long documents depend on how much memory your browser has, so close other heavy tabs if a large file is slow.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in a mobile browser like any other page. Long documents take longer on a phone, and editing the DOCX afterwards is easier on a computer.
