Details
Decide where each new part begins and press Split PDF. The tool lists every part with its page range before anything runs, then writes each part as its own PDF and packs them into one zip. Every output is reopened and read back against its source pages, while the file itself stays in this browser tab.
Cutting a document into parts, step by step
-
Choose the PDF
Press Choose a PDF, or drop the file on the page. Page thumbnails are drawn in this browser tab and the Split points section opens. The first page is already marked Starts part 1, because every split begins there.
-
Mark where each part begins
Find the page that opens a new part and press Start a new file here on it. Pressing again offers Remove this boundary, Undo and Redo step through changes, and Reset boundaries clears them all. The status line keeps count: how many boundaries are set and how many files will be created.
-
Read the Files to create plan
Every part is listed as Part 1, Part 2 and so on, each with its page range, followed by the totals: how many files will contain all the pages. The Split PDF button stays disabled until at least one boundary exists, so a plan of one file cannot run by accident.
-
Press Split PDF and download the zip
The browser writes each part as its own PDF, reopens every one of them, and compares each with its source pages. If any part fails the check, nothing is offered. If all pass, they are packed into one zip: press Download ZIP to save it.
Splitting here is free and needs no account. The page loads over the web and then does the whole job locally, so your document never travels anywhere.
A training manual that must become five handouts
A learning coordinator owns onboarding-manual.pdf: 96 pages, five chapters, one file. Each trainer needs only their chapter, and emailing the whole manual to everyone means four chapters of noise per inbox. The chapter title pages sit at pages 1, 18, 37, 55 and 78, easy to spot in the thumbnails.
Four boundaries turn one manual into five parts: pages 1 to 17, 18 to 36, 37 to 54, 55 to 77, and 78 to 96. The Files to create plan shows all five ranges before the split runs, and every page appears in exactly one part, so nothing is dropped or duplicated. The download arrives as onboarding-manual-split.zip, holding onboarding-manual-part-01-pages-1-17.pdf through part 05. Rename each part after its chapter before sending.
Boundaries follow positions in the file, not printed page numbers, so a manual whose first chapter starts on printed page 1 after four roman-numbered preface pages needs its boundary on file page 5. Thumbnails make this visible: scroll, find the title page, mark it. When the parts must go back together later, Merge PDF rejoins them in any order you choose.
Split plans that fail before they run
The boundary sits on the wrong page. The classic off-by-one: marking the last page of chapter one instead of the first page of chapter two. Remember the rule the button states: the marked page starts the new file. Read the Files to create ranges before pressing Split PDF, because the ranges show the mistake plainly.
No boundary at all. Opening the tool, admiring the thumbnails, and pressing Split PDF does nothing: the button stays disabled until at least one boundary exists, with a message saying so. One boundary makes two files, which is the smallest split there is.
Expecting a single PDF out. This tool always answers with a zip, one PDF per part. If you wanted one file holding a few chosen pages, that is Extract PDF pages; if you wanted one file with some pages gone, that is Delete PDF pages. Splitting multiplies files by design.
A locked file stops the start. A password-protected PDF is refused before any thumbnail is drawn. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, using the password you already know, then split the unlocked copy.
Bookmarks and cross-links did not survive the cut. Outlines, custom page labels and links that pointed across the new boundary may not travel into the parts. The pages, their sizes and their selectable text are checked and reported; document-level furniture is not promised.
When splitting is not the tool you want
Splitting keeps every page and multiplies the files. If your job is different, pick the tool that matches it. A handful of pages to lift out of a long document is Extract PDF pages, which can also type page numbers instead of clicking thumbnails. Pages to throw away rather than separate is Delete PDF pages. Every page alone in its own file is Organize pages with the Separate PDFs output, and the single-pages page walks through that shape.
Splitting also preserves order: parts leave in the sequence they had. To reorder pages, do that first in Organize pages, then split the arranged result. And a file whose password nobody knows cannot be split anywhere until the sender shares it or an unlocked copy.
Short answers about splitting PDFs
- Which page does a boundary belong on?
- The first page of the new part. Mark page 18 and the split falls between pages 17 and 18: page 18 starts Part 2. The Files to create ranges show the cut before anything runs, so read them.
- Can I split a PDF into just two files?
- Yes. One boundary is the smallest split there is. The plan shows Part 1 and Part 2 with their ranges, and the zip holds exactly those two PDFs.
- Why do I get a zip instead of separate downloads?
- Because browsers throttle and then block long runs of repeated downloads. One archive with every part inside downloads reliably, and you open it once and take what you need.
- What are the files inside the zip called?
- Each part takes the source name, a padded part number and its page range: manual-part-01-pages-1-17.pdf, manual-part-02-pages-18-36.pdf, and so on. They sort in part order in any file manager.
- Can I split off a single page?
- Yes. Put one boundary on that page and one on the page after it, and the single page becomes its own part. If that is all you want, Extract PDF pages reaches it with fewer clicks.
- Do links between the parts survive?
- Links that pointed across the new boundary may break, and outlines, custom page labels or form behavior may not travel into the parts. The pages, their sizes and their selectable text are checked and reported instead.
