Flatten a PDF

or drop one here
Choose a PDF first.

Open a filled PDF, choose whether form fields, visible marks or both become permanent, and download a checked copy with -flattened in its name. It inventories fields, marks, links, signatures and layers before changing anything, keeps links clickable, and refuses to drop marks it cannot reproduce safely. Page count, geometry and selectable text are verified before the download appears.

The application that must survive the inbox

Flattening fits the moment a form is done and must stay done. A filled application, a countersigned agreement, a reviewed report: the answers are final, and the next person who opens the file should read them, not edit them.

Say HarborView-Rental-Application-filled.pdf just came back from the applicant: forty boxes answered, two checkboxes ticked, a signature on page six. Before forwarding it to the landlord you open it here with both options ticked, Form fields and their values plus Comments, highlights and stamps, then Flatten PDF. The answers bake into the page as printed text, the field objects disappear, and the landlord receives a file where nothing can be cleared by a stray click.

What each object becomes:

What flattening does to each object

The saved file is reopened and must keep its page count, its geometry and at least 98 percent of its non-space selectable characters. Links are counted to confirm they survived, and the result names anything left interactive. A locked file is refused before anything changes.

From live form to fixed copy in four steps

  1. Choose a PDF

Press Choose a PDF or drop the file onto the page. Each option then shows its totals: fields, marks, links, signatures and layers found inside.

  2. Review what was found

Read the inspection summary before touching anything. Answered fields, stray comments, hidden layers and existing signatures all show up here.

  3. Choose what becomes permanent

Keep Form fields and their values, Comments, highlights and stamps, or both selected. Links stay clickable either way, and marks without a usable appearance stay unchanged.

  4. Flatten and download

Press Flatten PDF and confirm the signature warning if the file carries one. The output is reopened and checked before Download flattened PDF appears.

Flat files that disappoint, and how to avoid them

Flattening before the last answer is the classic: once values are page content, nobody edits them, including you. Keep the pre-flatten original, finish every box in Fill PDF form, and flatten only the copy that travels.

A flat file that still shows editable boxes was flattened with fields deselected, or the boxes were never fields at all. Tick Form fields and their values and rerun; if the boxes persist, they are drawn content, not fields, and were never editable.

Signatures die here by design: new bytes invalidate existing digital seals, which is why the tool demands a tick on the warning. Flatten before collecting certificate signatures, never after. Locked files stop the run before anything changes; open them with Unlock PDF first.

When flattening is premature

A form still collecting answers must stay live: flattening a half filled application freezes the blanks too. Send the interactive file, collect every answer, then flatten the finished copy for the archive.

Flattening is not cleaning: author names, edit history and hidden layers survive the run. When the file travels outside your walls, follow with Remove PDF metadata or run a Privacy scan first. To shrink the fixed copy for the inbox, Compress PDF takes it next.

Short answers about flattening PDFs

Can I unflatten a file later?
No. The interactive objects are removed and only their printed look remains. Keep the original; flatten a copy.
Will the file still print the same?
Yes, usually better: print systems that choked on live fields receive plain page content. Geometry is verified unchanged before download.
Why did some comments survive flattening?
They had no usable appearance to bake in, so the tool left them rather than risk erasing information. The result screen names how many stayed.
Does flattening remove the password?
No. A locked file is refused before anything changes. Unlock it first, then flatten the open copy.
My portal rejects the flattened file. What now?
Some portals want live fields, not a fixed copy: they extract answers from the boxes. Send the pre-flatten original there and keep the flat copy for humans.
