Password protection

Remove protection using a password you know.

This does not guess or crack a password. Owner-password files may open without an entry.

Choose a PDF file first.

Type the password that opens your PDF and download an unlocked copy with -unlocked in its name, built entirely in this browser tab. Files that only restrict printing or copying unlock without any entry, because their pages were never scrambled against you. The output is reopened without a password and checked page by page before the download appears.

The bank statement that fights every tool

This page removes protection from files you can already open. If you know the password, or the file opens freely but refuses printing and copying, the lock comes off here.

Say the mortgage broker needs March-bank-statement.pdf merged with two pay slips, but the statement demands a password on open and every tool refuses it. You open it here on a Sunday evening, type the password from the bank's letter into Current password, and press Unlock PDF. A minute later March-bank-statement-unlocked.pdf downloads: same pages, same text, no prompt. The merge goes through.

Protection here means encryption: the page content is scrambled with a key, and your password unwraps that key so every page decodes. The tool copies the decoded pages into a fresh file and carries the document info across. The reopen check then proves the new file opens with no password, holds the same pages and text, and carries no encryption at all.

Some files open with no prompt yet block printing or copying. Those carry an owner password that sets permissions on pages anyone can read, so nothing was ever scrambled against you. Leave Current password empty and run: the permission layer drops because the pages were readable from the start.

Four steps from locked file to open copy

  1. Choose a protected PDF

Press Choose a PDF or drop the file onto the page. The tool reads whether the file is encrypted and whether it demands a password on open.

  2. Enter the current password

Type the password that opens the file into Current password. Owner-password files open without an entry, so skip typing when the file opens on its own.

  3. Press Unlock PDF

The password unwraps the key inside this tab only: it never reaches usage data, the URL, logs or debug data. A wrong password stops here with That password did not open this PDF.

  4. Download the checked copy

The unlocked file is reopened without a password and compared page by page with the source. Press Download unlocked PDF for the copy with -unlocked in its name.

Locks that will not budge, and why

When the run refuses, work through this list:

A file with no protection at all disables the run with This PDF does not have password protection to remove. Nothing is rewritten and the original stays untouched, which is the correct answer for an already open file.

When unlocking is the wrong move

A forgotten password has no honest browser fix. No tool here guesses or cracks anything; ask the sender to reissue the file or the password. Guessing services that promise otherwise want your file and your money, in that order.

Keep protection when the file still travels: an unlocked copy forwarded by email is readable by everyone on the thread. Unlock only the copy you work with, and lock the finished file again with Protect mode or Password protect PDF. After unlocking, strip the traces the lock was hiding with Remove PDF metadata or a Privacy scan before sharing.

Short answers about unlocking PDFs

The file opens fine but blocks printing. Do I type anything?
No. That is an owner password on readable pages. Leave the box empty and run; the permission layer drops.
Can I unlock several files at once?
No, one file per run. Unlock each in turn, then merge the open copies with Merge PDFs.
Does unlocking change the pages?
No. Decoded pages are copied into a fresh file without rewriting or picturing them; only the encryption drops. The reopen check compares pages and text before download.
Why does the run button stay disabled?
Either the file carries no protection to remove, or it demands a password you have not typed yet. The hint under the button names the exact cause.
Can I lock the file again here?
Yes. Switch to Protect on this same page, or open Password protect PDF for the focused flow, then enter and confirm a new password of at least 6 characters.

The rest of the box, same tab, same rules

Each tool below runs in the browser with no account and reopens its own output before the download. Unlock here first, then edit, compress or convert the open copy.
