Soda PDF or PDFGym: suite or single-purpose tools?

Soda PDF is a full suite: a Windows desktop app for offline work, an online platform with cloud storage, and free quick tools for one-off jobs. PDFGym is the opposite shape, single-purpose tools that run in the tab and never upload anything. The right one depends on whether you want a home for documents or a quick fix for one.

Desktop suite, online platform, free quick tools

Soda PDF's homepage presents three faces at once. Soda PDF Desktop is a Windows application for uninterrupted offline work. Soda PDF Online runs the tools in a browser on any device, with cloud storage built in and access from Dropbox, Google Drive, SharePoint or Evernote. And free quick tools cover merge, compress, edit, convert and split with no installation. Checked 2 November 2026. Most confusion about this brand comes from reviews blending those three faces into one verdict.

Klara, an office manager, prepares board packs every quarter: she merges reports, marks up drafts, secures the finished pack with a password and archives it. That is suite work, and the desktop app plus cloud storage fits her routine. Her intern, who only has to split a scanned menu into two files once, should ignore the entire suite and use a free quick tool, from Soda PDF or from PDFGym, without creating anything.

The pricing side was read separately. On 10 September 2026 sodapdf.com/pricing named Pro, Team and Business tiers, each with an unlimited AI assistant, and storage allowances of five, five and ten gigabytes. The page served no price in its text, so no Soda PDF figure appears on this page either.

Who should pick which

Where Soda PDF wins

Depth and device-hopping. The suite edits text in place, whites out and highlights, recognises scanned text automatically or in selected areas, converts Office files both ways, batch converts, translates documents while keeping layout, answers questions about documents through its AI assistant, and sends contracts for e-signature. Checked 2 November 2026. PDFGym matches none of that paragraph beyond basic conversion and light page edits, and it does not try to.

The cross-device story is the other real win. Start on the office computer, save through a connected drive, finish on the phone. For shareable work documents that flow is genuinely convenient, and it is the reason the product holds your files rather than a flaw in it. Just know which face of the brand a review praises: desktop depth and quick-tool simplicity are different products.

Where PDFGym fits

PDFGym fits the job that is over in a minute and should leave no trace. Merging needs at least two PDF inputs, warns about interactive form or signature fields before running, then reopens the result and checks that it opens, that nothing is missing or misordered, and that each page kept its size and nearly all of its text. Compression aims at an exact kilobyte figure instead of a preset.

Where Office files enter the picture, Word to PDF and Excel to PDF turn DOCX and XLSX content into searchable PDFs locally, which can then be merged like any other PDF. The converter roundup sorts the wider conversion field by format pair, and the PDF24 comparison covers the other large suite with a desktop build.

How this comparison was checked

Soda PDF's homepage was read on 2 November 2026 and the suite, platform, quick-tool and feature claims above quote it. The tier names, AI assistant and storage figures quote the pricing page as read on 10 September 2026, which showed no prices. PDFGym's behaviors quote the tool pages in this site's source. No accounts were created and no files were uploaded for this page.

Short answers about Soda PDF and PDFGym

Is Soda PDF free?
Partly. Its free quick tools cover merge, compress, edit, convert and split with no installation, checked 2 November 2026. The desktop suite and the online platform with cloud storage sit on paid Pro, Team and Business tiers.
What did the Soda PDF pricing page show?
On 10 September 2026 it listed Pro, Team and Business tiers with an unlimited AI assistant on each and cloud storage of five, five and ten gigabytes. It showed no prices, so this page quotes none.
Does either tool upload my file?
Soda PDF Online is a cloud platform with built-in storage, so documents there live in an account by design; the desktop app works offline instead. PDFGym uploads nothing in any tool, because everything runs in the tab.
Which merges Office files into a PDF?
Soda PDF merges Word, Excel and PowerPoint files into a PDF directly, checked 2 November 2026. PDFGym joins PDF files only, so convert DOCX or XLSX to PDF first and then merge.
