Fill a PDF form

or drop one here
Choose a PDF first.

Open a PDF that already contains interactive form fields, type into each box where it sits on the page, and save a checked copy with -filled in its name. Text boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns and option lists all work where they appear on the page, and every field stays editable after you save. Your file and every answer stay inside this browser tab from start to finish.

Which files work here, and what happens to them

This page works with PDFs that already contain interactive fields, the kind a landlord or a clinic builds into the file itself. If the boxes on your screen are real stored fields, you can type into them here; if the page is a flat scan that only looks like a form, the page tells you there is nothing to fill instead of guessing.

Picture a rental application called HarborView-Rental-Application.pdf: six pages, close to forty boxes, due back by Friday morning. You open it here on a Tuesday night because the office printer jammed last week. Each box accepts typing where it sits, the lease length dropdown offers its stored options, and split boxes sharing one label appear grouped: when the label mentions Social Security or Employer Identification, touch screens get a numeric keypad for the digit parts.

Two buttons guard against mistakes: Clear answers wipes what you typed, and Restore original answers brings back answers the file held before you touched it. If a box is awkward to tap on the preview, open Use a field list instead. Locked, signature and button fields show their value but stay unchanged, and required boxes carry a Required by this form note.

Pressing Save filled PDF writes your answers with visible appearances, then reopens the saved file and confirms each value, each appearance, each page and the untouched selectable text before the download appears. The download is named after your file with -filled added, so the example returns as HarborView-Rental-Application-filled.pdf. A password locked file is refused with a request to unlock the PDF first.

Run through this list before you press the save button:

Four steps from empty boxes to a saved file

  1. Choose a PDF

Press Choose a PDF or drop the file onto the page. The tool counts the fillable and locked fields, then renders the first page with every box outlined.

  2. Type into each field on the page

Click or tap a box and type; tick checkboxes, pick one radio button per group, and choose dropdown options from their stored lists. Move between pages with the page selector.

  3. Press Save filled PDF

The button activates once a file is loaded. Saving writes each answer into its field with a visible appearance, keeps every field editable, and leaves signature boxes, action buttons and read-only boxes untouched.

  4. Download the checked copy

The saved file is reopened and verified before the download appears. Press Download filled PDF, then reopen the copy once to confirm your answers survived the trip.

Why answers go missing, and how to get them back

The most common surprise is a form with no fields at all: a scanned application looks fillable but stores no boxes, so the page reports that there is nothing to fill. Draw real boxes onto the scan first with Create PDF form, then return here.

Then the boxes that accept nothing: read-only, signature and button fields. They display their stored value with an explanation and stay unchanged. A visible signature is a different job and belongs to Sign PDF after the boxes are done.

A locked file stops the run before anything is written. Remove the password with Unlock PDF, then fill it. Rarely, a save stops because one character cannot be drawn with the file's text encoding; replacing that character, often a fancy quote pasted from elsewhere, lets the run through. If you cleared too much, Restore original answers recovers the answers the file carried before you touched it.

When a different route beats this page

Some forms never belonged in a general filler. A file that demands a certificate backed digital signature needs desktop software or your organization's signing service, because a typed name in a box is not the same thing. Ask the sender which kind the process accepts before you spend an evening on boxes that cannot satisfy it.

Portals with their own validation sometimes reject files filled anywhere except their own form. When the instructions name a portal, fill the form there. And when the recipient must receive answers nobody can edit, follow this page with Flatten PDF, which bakes the values into the page.

On a phone, this same page opens in the browser with no app to install, though forty boxes go faster with a real keyboard. For the nights when the laptop stays shut, the small screen moves live in Fill a PDF form on your phone.

Short answers about completing PDF forms

My PDF looks like a form, but the page finds no fields. What now?
The boxes are printed ink, not stored fields, which usually means the file is a scan or a flat export. Add real interactive fields with Create PDF form first, then come back and fill them here.
Will the recipient see my answers in their reader?
Yes. Each answer is saved with a visible appearance, and the tool reopens the output to confirm every value before offering the download. Reopen it once yourself; what you see is what they get.
Can I fix a typo after downloading?
Yes. Open the -filled copy here again or in any reader and correct the box. For a copy nobody can change, run the finished file through Flatten PDF.
What does Restore original answers do?
It brings back the answers the file held before you typed anything, discarding only your changes. Use it after an over eager Clear answers.
Why did the run stop with an error instead of saving?
Three usual causes: the file is password locked, one character cannot be drawn with the file's text encoding, or a value failed the reopen check. Unlock the file, replace exotic characters, or retype the flagged box and save again.

Other tools that share this tab's habits

Every tool below opens in the browser, checks its own output by reopening it before the download appears, and asks for no account. Pick the next job your file needs; the file itself never travels anywhere.
