Preparing previewDetails
4 MB is 4,194,304 bytes, a generous budget where a dozen photos still look like themselves. This page aims your PDF at that number entirely in your browser, checks the result before download, and never uploads a byte of your file.
Four moves to a 4 MB file
Load the PDF
Press Choose a PDF, or drag the file into the tab. Brochures, catalogues and reports all open right here.
Keep the 4 MB preset
This page opens with 4 MB and the MB unit already set. If your ceiling is different, tap a chip or type the exact cap yourself.
Press Compress
Watch the progress steps narrate the race: tidying structure, shrinking images, cutting font data, and only if needed, a smaller page render.
Compare, then download
The result shows the new size, the saving and the original next to an Original versus Compressed preview. Press Download PDF when the photos please you; Details below keeps the full method report.
For the internals of each pass, see how it works. If your source dwarfs this number, the large file guide plans the route.
The brochure a boutique actually opens
Alena makes ceramics and sends a seasonal lookbook to small shops: twelve pages, product photos, price list, currently lookbook-autumn.pdf at 22 MB. One boutique owner told her plainly that anything over 5 MB goes to spam, so the lookbook needs a diet that keeps the glaze colours honest.
She runs it here at 4 MB. Font subsetting and the rebuild shave the text weight for free, the image pass takes the photos down moderately, and the file lands at 3.7 MB. The preview shows the turquoise glaze still turquoise, the price table pixel sharp, and the email goes out the same morning. Two shops reply within a week.
That is the 4 MB promise: photos with their character intact, text untouched, and a file that sails through spam filters and caps aimed at 5 MB and above.
Choosing between 3, 4 and 5 MB
Think of these three as the same file with different photo budgets. At 3 MB the images give up the most; at 5 MB they give up the least; 4 MB sits in the middle with roughly a third more image detail than 3 MB for the same pages. When the recipient named no number, 4 MB is the safe middle that clears most portals and most mailboxes.
Mind the mail encoding on tight ceilings: attachments inflate by roughly a third in transit, so a 4 MB file occupies about 5.3 MB of the recipient's cap. Against a strict 5 MB mailbox, prefer 3 MB; against a 10 MB ceiling, 5 MB spends the extra detail well. After a portal refusal, rerun at 3.9 MB to dodge the flat million versus binary megabyte gap of about 194 KB.
Thirty to forty scan pages share this budget at roughly 100 KB each, which keeps print and photos clear. A full resolution phone photo can weigh 4 MB alone, so albums need fewer pages per file, not a braver target.
Misses at a generous target
Landing above 4 MB means the pages are heavy, not that the page failed: cut the count with Split PDF so each part enjoys the full budget, or drop filler with Delete PDF pages. The miss message states exactly how far short the run stopped, and offers one stronger pass via Try stronger compression, with the softening cost stated before you click.
Dull colours after the run usually trace to a double squeeze: always compress from the master export, never from a previously shrunk file. Password locked originals skip the rebuild passes, so open them through Unlock PDF first and judge the honest result.
Routes that beat another megabyte
When the recipient prints the brochure, send the master through a file sharing link instead of any diet; screens forgive, presses do not. When the photos only need a glance in chat, PDF to JPG exports them directly. And when one file must feed both print and mail, keep two versions: the master for the press, the 4 MB one for the inbox.
Plain answers about 4 MB
- Do photos stay good at 4 MB?
- For a dozen or so photos, yes. Colours and details survive well at this budget; compare the Original and Compressed crops at full zoom before downloading.
- How many bytes is 4 MB here?
- 4,194,304 bytes. Decimal counters stop at 4,000,000, so after a refusal rerun at 3.9 MB to clear both readings.
- Will this run on a phone?
- Yes. Files around this size are comfortable for a phone browser, and nothing uploads from either device. Keep the tab open until the download lands.
- Does the text stay selectable?
- Yes. Pages are recounted and characters compared against the original, and any candidate below 98% is refused. Failed candidates are discarded during the run, visibly, as failed checks.
- Can every file reach 4 MB?
- Almost any normal document can, since this target is roomy. Giant albums and hundred page scans may still need splitting first.
